Max Skinner (Russell Crowe) adalah seorang pialang dan pemain saham di London yang ambisius. Kecerdasan, naluri dan insting alami Max dalam menafsir saham dan peluang bisnis membuat ia disegani teman dan relasi baik di kantor maupun di luar perusahaan Keadaan ini ditambah dengan karakter Max yang opurtunis, tak kenal kasihan, curang, licik dan menghalalkan segala cara untuk memuaskan ambisinya. Secara materi tak ada yang kurang dari kehidupan Max, hanya satu yang tak dimiliki Max yaitu cinta sejati.

Sejak kecil Max adalah seorang yatim piatu dan hidup bersama paman Henry (Albert Finney) yang memiliki kebun Anggur di Province, Prancis, walaupun sebenarnya Max dan paman Henry berasal dari Inggris. Namun, rutinitas dan kerja keras membuat Max melupakan paman Harry hingga suatu saat, Max mendapat kabar bahwa pamannya meninggal, dan dia harus kembali ke Prancis, untuk mengurusi segala hal, dan menjadi pewaris, karena paman Harry tak menuliskan surat wasiat. Mengetahui hal tersebut, sifat licik dan serakah tumbuh dalam diri Max untuk menjadi pewaris tunggal harta pamannya.

Dengan penuh percaya diri, Mas kembali ke Province, dengan niat menjual kebun anggur dan rumah pamannya, dan meraup untung besar. Terbiasa hidup di dunia kapitalis membuat Max buta dan tak bisa melihat kenangan manis yang pernah terjadi antara dirinya dan paman Henry.

Tiba di Province, Max mencoba beradaptasi dan kembali membuka kembali kisah lama dengan sang paman. Bertemu dengan sobat lama pamannya, Francis (Didier Bourdon) dan istrinya Ludivine (Isabelle Candelier).

Perlahan Max menjalani babak baru dalam hidupnya dan menyadari bahwa kehidupan di sana patut ia nikmati, apalagi kehadiran Fanny Chenal (Marion Cotillard), wanita pemilik restauran yang membuat hati Max kebat-kebit, dan mulai menghadirkan cinta di hati Max.

Di saat Max mulai membiasakan diri dengan Province, dan menemukan cinta dari Fanny, datang seorang perempuan dari Napa, Christie Roberts (Abbie Cornish) yang mengaku sebagai putri tunggal paman Harry. Di saat yang sama Max juga mendapat kabar bahwa ia harus segera menghadap bosnya di London, dan menyelamatkan posisinya di perusahaanya jika tak ingin disabet oleh orang lain.

Max berada dalam dilema, apakah dia harus kembali ke kehidupan glamornya di London dengan konsekuensi kehilangan cinta yang mulai bersemi di hatinya. Atau memilih tinggal di pedesaan kecil nan romantis di Prancis, dan hidup sederhana dalam kenangan kisah lama bersama pamannya dan merajut kasih dengan Fanny?

Dengan latar belakang situasi di Sekolah Menengah Umum di San Fernando Valley, cerita ini mengenai seorang gadis yang tidak populer bernama Sam Montgomery (diperankan oleh Hilary Duff), yang tinggal dengan ibu tiri dan saudara perempuan tirinya, setelah meninggalnya sang ayah. Sang ibu tiri, yang dahulunya bekerja sebagai seorang pramusaji, menyuruh Sam untuk mengerjakan semua pekerjaan kasar di rumah. Sebuah drama sejarah pada masa pemerintahan Roma di Mesir, seorang budak mengikuti ajaran Kristiani untuk mendapatkan kebebasan. Sementara itu ia juga jatuh cinta dengan majikannya, seorang profesor filsafat terkenal dan seorang atheis, Hypatia dari Alexandria.

Although no self-respecting epic can come in at less than two hours, Alejandro Amenabar will nevertheless need good word-of-mouth to attract wider audiences willing to sit through 144 minutes and a heavy-handed beginning in his latest film, "Agora." Hopefully, he will get it.

Amenabar gets most of the epic staples out of the way relatively early: flatly acted scenes of textbook exposition, overly earnest extras, main characters who wander unscathed through hordes of butchery and, of course, frequently swelling music. The story then becomes a timely parable on religious intolerance, inexorable fundamentalist violence and the powerlessness of reason and personal freedom in the face of both.

The heart of the film is Hypatia (Rachel Weisz in an unfaltering performance), the fourth century AD philosopher and teacher who lived in Alexandria during the Roman Empire. Married only to her unquenchable intellect and passion for mathematics and astronomy, she is loved by two men: her slave, Davus (Max Minghella), and her student, Orestes (Oscar Isaac).
Politics in the film are weakest during the overtly political speeches and monologues, and best captured in the details. Like many, Davus seeks not spiritual salvation in the Christian uprising but freedom from slavery, despite the bloodshed. His first attempt at prayer is brilliant: Unable to remember the Lord's Prayer, he quickly falls into a mantra to God to keep Hypatia away from Orestes. For his part, Orestes will renounce paganism and convert to Christianity during his rise in Roman politics.

Amenabar and screenwriter Mateo Gil adeptly show that each character's destiny is written from the onset. As is history when hatred and power lust are corruptly instrumentalized in the name of a single, incontestable truth.

There is also no question as to what side the filmmakers are on. The Christians in "Agora" are more preoccupied with slaughtering than spirituality and the only truly principled character is Hypatia the atheist, who may have come close to proving that the Earth revolves around the sun 1,200 years before Johannes Kepler. She is the only one who never sacrifices her unwavering "faith," in reason and intellectual freedom, for personal gain.

It is a pleasure to see Weisz's scenes of scientific inquiry, which capture the passion of research and discovery without artifice or pretension. That the scientist is a woman makes it all the more engaging.

The entire cast comes through very well after the shaky beginning, and while Minghella says little he has good screen presence. However, the biggest surprises are the lesser-known supporting actors: Isaac; Sammy Samir as a bishop seemingly devoid of human emotion; and Ashraf Barhom, whose Ammonious, a Christian Parabalani, is the epitome of a devout-less thug.

Meski sudah meraih popularitas bukan berarti pendidikan lantas tak ada gunanya. Itulah yang dipikirkan David Seville (Jason Lee) yang mengirim Alvin (Justin Long) dan kedua temannya ke sebuah sekolah untuk kembali belajar, sesuatu yang tak pernah terlintas di benak Alvin.

Dengan berat hati terpaksa Alvin, Simon (Matthew Gray Gubler), dan Theodore (Jesse McCartney) menuruti kemauan David meski sebenarnya mereka sama sekali tak berminat untuk kembali ke sekolah. Dalam waktu singkat Alvin dan kedua temannya merasa terasing di tengah para manusia yang ada di sekolah ini dan itu adalah siksaan berat buat ketiga chipmunk ini.

Di saat yang bersamaan, Ian Hawke (David Cross) yang gagal mendapatkan Alvin and the Chipmunks berusaha menebus kekalahan ini dengan mencari sekelompok binatang yang mampu menyanyi dan menari layaknya Alvin dan teman-temannya. Pencarian Ian berakhir ketika ia menemukan The Chipettes yang beranggotakan Brittany (Anna Faris, Jeanette (Christina Applegate), dan Eleanor (Amy Poehler). Ian berencana membawa The Chipettes menuju puncak ketenaran seperti Alvin dan kedua temannya.
